Health impacts from poor indoor air quality as a result of unclean cooking are much cited as a key motivation for upgrading to ‘improved cookstoves’ (ICS) and
fuel switching.
Yet inadequate attention to ventilation practice and fuel stacking (using multiple stoves, with numerous fuel types) means that benefits from
cookstove upgrades often do not help health as expected. Attention to ventilation is likely to be the lowest cost method to improve indoor air quality.
