Spectrum considers gender inequality a major issue in Myanmar. We recognise that it is critical to include more men in actions to improve gender equality.

Norms that privilege the position of males have gone largely unchallenged and allow great inequality and discrimination.

We have supported and continue to promote work towards developing the National Strategic Plan for the Advancement of Women (NSPAW) 2012-2021. This focuses on securing women's rights in decision-making, the media, education, health and the economy.

Spectrum's Resources – Rights – Justice focus aims to consider gender a critical issue in every aspect of our work. Where possible we always use a gender disaggregated approach to understanding the different circumstances, needs and aspirations of women, girls, boys and men.

We focus mainly on economic and social rights aspects of gender. In this area inequality means that women and men often have unequal access to assets, education, training and opportunities they need to pursue or sustain their livelihoods or those of their families. Access to economic opportunities, income generation and land are key to women's economic empowerment. Without safe and non-exploitative economic opportunities, women face higher risks to provide for themselves and their families.

Gender inequality means that women are underrepresented in public life and government, despite laws and policies that document their right to social, economic, political and legal equality. In playing key roles in maintaining their families, women's needs are disproportionately affected by corruption, so we see that our anti-corruption work needs a specific gender-based approach.
